AP Ticker’s PIGGIE OF THE WEEK: Christine Flowers
Every Christmas, some heart-warming story shows up in the news. This year, it was Larry DiPrimo, the good-hearted New York cop who purchased a pair of $100 boots for officer who was sitting shoeless and wrapped in a blanket in Times Square. A few days later, Hillman was barefoot again, having hidden the boots away for fear of theft.
As it turns out, Hillman was not homeless, and has an apartment in the Bronx, funded by federal Section 8 rent vouchers, Social Security disability, and veterans benefits . However, Hillman is mentally ill, and like many in his situation, has a history of refusing help. So he spends his life on the streets.
Now, ordinary people look at a complicated story like this, and have some compassion for this Army vet.
But here in Philadelphia, we have Christine Flowers, who’s always shoving her Catholicism up your nose when it comes to abortion, birth control, gay rights, and anything else that offends her conservative sensibilities.
But when it comes to “love thy neighbor as thyself”, healing the sick, and compassion for the poor and downtrodden, it’s another story entirely.
“That there are so many people out there able to impose upon our better angels and then make a mockery of our good will, like the big-footed clod in Times Square, makes it that much harder to feel empathy” Flowers wrote in the Philly Daily News last week.
For good measure, she added “It only took a few days to realize that once again, pearls had been thrown before swine. That fellow in Times Square did not deserve the kindness shown to him by the police officer… It does, however, show us that the saying “whatsoever you do to the least of my children, you do to me” doesn’t always translate well on the mean streets.” Bless her hypocritical Christian heart!
Note to Christine: nowhere in the Bible does Jesus distinguish between the deserving and the undeserving poor. In fact, he says quite the opposite in the Sermon on the Mount, which conservatives have SUCH a hard time remembering: “Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.”
So congratulations to YOU Christine Flowers: your lack of empathy and compassion for the poor and the sick make you our Piggie of the Week. We look forward to the day when St. Peter says “depart, I never knew you” and casts you into the lake of fire.
I’m AP Ticker… and Satan is real.
